My first priority here at Primary Solutions Consulting - is
always to give you knowledge and understanding.
But I can’t share every detail publicly — because I don’t want to educate my competition.
When you understand the truth, you’ll immediately recognize what’s not true.
If you don’t know the truth first, you won’t see the danger until it’s too late.
This is true in water treatment, and it’s a biblical principle as well:
Truth exposes that which is false.
How often should you test your home’s water quality?
City Water
If you’re on city water, the truth is your water doesn’t change very often unless something unusual is going on. Really, the only time you need to test city water is when something suddenly tastes weird, when something smells off, when the color changes, or when you’re getting a new water system and need to program it correctly.
All city water has a similar pattern. It’s usually hard, it tastes like chemicals, and it smells like chemicals. That’s normal for untreated tap water. The city is required by law to provide safe drinking water, and they usually take out the things that could hurt you — bacteria, parasites, etc.
They are not obligated to change the hardness. Hardness is not considered a safety issue, so they leave it in.
However — and I see this every day — there is iron in city water, even though you often don’t taste it. When I cut into people’s pipes, especially plastic pipes, you can see the orange coating inside. And when somebody has a water softener, you can see the difference clearly: orange coating on the incoming line, and a clean line coming out of the system.
Why the chemicals are there
Now let’s talk about the chemicals in city water, because this part is important for people to understand.
The chlorine and ammonia (combined into chloramines) are there because the city must keep disinfectant levels high enough at multiple points throughout the system. It’s not optional — it’s the law. Those chemicals are necessary to protect you from far worse things.
Nobody loves drinking chlorine or chloramines. But they protect you from bacteria, viruses, parasites, biofilm, and other contaminants that would make you very sick.
These chemicals are mandatory for the city — but they are not mandatory for you to drink.
You have every right to take them out right before you use the water. That’s exactly why people install water systems: to remove the chemicals, remove the hardness, remove the smell and taste, and turn “city water” into clean, soft, beautiful water that feels good, smells good, and tastes good.
Well Water
Now, if you’re on a well, your answer is different. You pretty much know your water all the time. It doesn’t randomly change unless something around you changes.
If they’re drilling nearby, if dumping is happening, if construction is disturbing the ground, if you suspect contamination, that’s when you test.
If you start getting sick, you might have bacteria in the well. In that case you go buy a bacteria test kit, follow the instructions carefully, send the sample in, and they’ll tell you whether you have E. coli or any other harmful bacteria.
Bottom Line
So the best answer to “How often should I test my home’s water quality?” is this:
Test when something changes around you.
Test when something tastes or smells wrong.
Test when you’re programming or adjusting a water system.
Test when you’re on a well and you have a reason to suspect contamination.
Otherwise, water quality doesn’t usually change unless something around it changes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Water Quality and Filtration
How often should I test my home's water quality?
What types of water filtration systems do you install?
What kind of water filtration systems do you install?
Short answer 💧: Any system you want — but if you get a system from me, you get the best version of it.
I can install any kind of water system.
I install water filtration, water purification, reverse osmosis, water softeners, dual-media water softeners, whole-house systems — you name it, I can install it.
For city water, I typically recommend a dual-media water softener because it gives you both filtration and softening in one system.
For wells, I can install systems to remove iron and sulfur, acid neutralizers, whole-house softeners, and specialized filtration depending on your well test results.
If your well water is acidic, I use calcite and/or Kurex based on your pH. If the pH is above 6, calcite alone may work. If the pH is below 6, we use calcite and Kurex. And if you put an acid neutralizer on a well, you always need a water softener afterward, because the acid neutralizer adds hardness.
But if you're asking what kind of system I offer my customers — that's different.
This is where quality matters. I'm not here to sell the cheapest system just to get your business. I build systems correctly, using the best components.
Best tank 👍: the Vortech / Enpress tank. No gravel beds, no channeling, better flow, better cleaning, and better efficiency.
Best valve 👍: the Clack valve. Reliable, durable, repairable, and proven in the industry.
Best media combinations: matched to your water — not a “cookie-cutter” mix like online bundles. I’ll only offer you what is truly right for your water. No gimmicks. No “one size fits all.” No systems built to a price point instead of a quality level.
Can you install a system I bought online?
Yes — but here’s the truth ⚠️:
Online systems are almost always lower quality, and you’re stuck dealing with cheap valves, mixed media blends that don’t solve the real problem, and weak warranty support. You’re the one who has to handle warranty claims, ship parts back, wait for replacements, and live with no system while you wait.
Meanwhile, I’m making additional trips to diagnose, uninstall, reinstall, and fix problems caused by cheap equipment — and every trip has a fee. Most people who go this route end up saying, “Wayne, I should’ve just let you build it right the first time.”
The bottom line ✅
I can install any system you want. But if you get a system from me, you’re getting the best tank, the best valve, the right media for your water, a system built to last, a system that actually solves the problem — and me, standing behind it when you need help.
Before you spend a dime or make a decision, call me first. A quick conversation can save you a lot of frustration and money.
