Reverse Osmosis Storage Tank Troubleshooting: Why Your RO System Has Low Water or Low Pressure

Try this easy guide before you replace anything — most RO water problems are caused by one simple issue: your storage tank isn’t doing its job.

Take a breath — I’ve got you covered.
I’ll show you exactly how to fix this in just a moment

Okay, you've got three options. You can do it yourself, you can call me and I'll tell you how to do it, or you can have me come and do it. You ready? -- I'm going to give you step-by-step instructions.

Which Category Are You In?

So for y’all that are already way ahead of me, there are only two categories:

1️⃣ You need new filters

2️⃣ You need air in your bladder tank

That’s it.

How do you determine the difference?
That’s what I’m going to show you next.

Real-World Symptoms People Search For:

  • RO faucet trickling
  • Storage tank not filling
  • Low RO water pressure
  • RO system takes forever
  • RO flow dropped suddenly
  • Water barely drips from the RO faucet
  • RO tank seems empty
  • Reverse osmosis system slow after filter change
  • RO tank pressure wrong
  • No water coming out of RO spout

1️⃣ Clogged or Exhausted RO Filters

Symptom:

Your tank is EMPTY — zero water available.

How you know for sure:

  • Faucets barely drip, or
  • Nothing comes out at all, and
  • When you shake the tank, it feels light — because it IS empty.
  • The system can’t make water fast enough to refill the tank.

Important:

If the tank is empty, it cannot be an air issue.
This is
100% a filter issue    Replace your filters

🚨 IMPORTANT — Check for a Broken Bladder

Before you refill the tank:

Press the pin inside the air valve (like letting air out of a bicycle tire).

  • AIR comes out → tank is good

WATER comes out → bladder is broken
→ You need a new tank. No amount of air will fix it.

Do Any of These Sound Like Your RO Problem?

If you’re dealing with slow water flow, barely any pressure, or an RO tank that just doesn’t fill — you’re not alone.
Most Houston homeowners describe the exact same symptoms, using the exact same phrases you probably typed into Google:

Customer Panic Thoughts (totally normal):

  • “Why is my RO system so slow?”
  • “Is my RO system broken?”
  • “Why is the water barely coming out?”
  • “Do I need a new tank?”
  • “What do I replace first?”
  • “Did my filters go bad?”
  • “Why can’t I fill the jug?”
  • “It used to be fast… what happened?”

2️⃣ Tank With Low or No Air in the Bladder

Symptom:

You DO have water in the tank — but you can’t get it OUT.  Replace the air in the tank

How this looks:

  • Pitchers fill halfway and then slow to a crawl
  • You can’t fill a full glass
  • Flow starts strong and dies
  • You hear gurgling
  • Water stops even though the tank still feels heavy

Important:

If you get ANY water at all, even a little, that means the filters are working and the tank has water inside it.

If the tank has water,
➡️
the filters are fine
➡️ The problem is
100% air pressure in the bladder.

How to Fix Your RO Tank (Step-By-Step)

Follow these steps before buying a new tank. This is the correct way to recharge the bladder.

🛠️ Step 1 — Shut Off the Water Supply

Turn off the small valve feeding water into the RO system.
This stops new water from trying to enter the tank while you work.

🛠️ Step 2 — Open the Little Blue Valve on Top of the Tank

This lets the tank drain freely while you add air later.

🛠️ Step 3 — Lay the Tank on Its Side

RO tanks have their air valve on the bottom, just like a car tire valve.
You can’t reach it unless the tank is on its side.

🛠️ Step 4 — Open Your RO Drinking Faucet

This is important — opening the faucet allows the water inside the tank to escape as you pump air in.

🛠️ Step 5 — Add Air Using a Tire Pump or Small Compressor

Use the air valve on the bottom of the tank.

As you add air, water will start coming out of the RO faucet.
That is exactly what should happen.

Keep pumping until no more water comes out.

🛠️ Step 6 — When the Tank Is Completely Empty, Set Pressure to 7–10 PSI

This is the ONLY correct pressure for standard RO tanks.

• Adding more (like 15–20 PSI) will stop the RO from making water
• Adding less (0–4 PSI) will give you
weak flow

7–10 PSI is the sweet spot every RO system is designed around.

You’re Done — Tank Fixed!

Turn the water supply back on and let your RO system refill the tank.
